"
Majestic, Wonderful, Amazing mystic, Unique...
" and more words are necessary to describe
the largest wild surface of the planet.
Well-known as " the White Continent "
or " the Sixth Continent ",it is 1,000
km away from Ushuaia. It is the less explored
continent in the Earth. Its surface, of about
14,000,000 square km, mainly is represented by an
ice layer of about 4,000 ms of thickness,
covering a continental mass of 9,000,000 square
km.
It is one of the magical destinations that can be
offered and one of the easiest to sell, since
without knowing it has the same mystery to the
buyer as to the salesman. Each passenger who
returns from Antarctica, hardly find the words to
describe it, they just suggest to visit it to
discover how wonderful is to be in that place.
The volume of the visitors is increased year
after year. The nearest city to Antartica is
Ushuaia. " Gateway to Antartica ", this
is one of the reasons for which all the ships
that go there, leave from our Port. There is an
arc of islands that cause that the Antarctica
Peninsula continues towards the Weddel Sea, these
islands are South Shetland, South Georgias, South
Sandwich and South Orkneys. Some islands as
Deception Island have suffered recently vulcano
activity. The average temperature is under 0º
Celsius.
The
South Pole, is located 2,800 ms over the sea
level. The temperature vary between -40º C and
-70º C in August and -15º and -45º in
February. In addition to the global wind
currents, the Antarctica continent creates its
own wind system. The strongest winds are found
usually throughout the coast of the region called
Great Antarctica. Some areas, are calmed most of
the time but suddenly winds with hurricane force
called " kabatic " start. Almost all
the continent is desert.
Most of the animals that inhabit Antarctica, are
adapted to live in a frozen sea. The seals crab
eater seals and the Ross seals alternate on and
under the ice layer, also are the seals leopards
that remain long time outside the water. The
Emperor Penguin lives in the frozen sea during
the winter, the other penguins live on the ice in
the summer but they get close to the ice layer
edge of the sea during the rest of the year. Many
marine birds develop on the ice to hunt and to
feed themselves. |
