The excursion begins with the pickup of passengers in El Calafate. Once at the “Bajo de las Sombras” port, you will board the boat to cross Lago Rico, facing the imposing south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Upon disembarking, our mountain guides will lead you to a cozy shelter with a privileged view of the glacier.
The trekking begins! You will start with a walk along the lake’s shoreline while the guides explain about glaciology. Upon reaching the edge of the glacier, subgroups of a maximum of 20 people each, will be organized and you will be fitted with the crampons and helmets provided by the company. Once on the glacier, you will first receive a safety briefing and then walk on this frozen paradise, declared a World Heritage Site.
The glacier circuit is of medium difficulty; the ice surface is uneven but firm and safe. During the hike, you can appreciate a variety of typical glacier formations, such as deep crevasses, blue sinkholes, enormous seracs, and turquoise lagoons.
At the end of the ice hike, you will cross the periglacial zone and the lateral moraine, from where you will get a panoramic view of the Perito Moreno Glacier, the mountains, and the lake. Then, you will return along a trail that crosses the lush Patagonian forest, completing the three-hour hike (of which approximately one hour is spent on glacial ice).
Upon arrival at the refuge, you will be greeted with a hot drink, and shortly afterward, you will board the boat to return to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras.
The tour, including transportation, lasts approximately 10 hours in total and includes a guided tour of the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways, where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the glacier and explore one of the self-guided trails. If you choose not to use our transportation and choose to travel by your own means, the mini-trek lasts approximately 4:30 hours, departing from the port and returning to the same starting point.
