Did you choose to visit ‘The end of the World? CONGRATULATIONS! For sure you are going to live a lifetime experience with nature as the main star. But… What do you have to consider when preparing your luggage? Of course there are some basic stuff that cannot be missing. Before we talk about them, is important to explain more about the weather conditions you may find at this beautiful city.
Located at the South of Patagonia and surrounded by sea and mountains, the weather at the South of Tierra del Fuego is quite unique. As salt water moderates the temperature, no significant thermal differences are recorded. The average temperature in winter season is 0° celsius while in summer time the average temperature is 12° celsius. We usually have some snow fall between June and September. Then between December and March is the rainy seson which usually includes strong cold winds from the Southwest. The rest of the year is cold but nice.
Anyway, is also important to mention that the weather can change really fast along the day. We may experience all four season within one day, all year around. Sun, wind, rain, cold, warm, snow… Its a big lottery!
Keeping that in mind, let’s move on with what it interests us the most. Is very important to be ready for everything. Whats does it means? It means we should dress like onions: in layers that can be taken off or putted on according to the temperature and the weather conditions. A good idea would be a cotton t-shirt, a fleece sweatshirt and a waterproof jacket. Also confortable pants and shoes are needed to allow you a gentle walk in the city, where most streets have sloops, and in the wild areas where the tours take place.
Rain is a frecuente visitor. Is not usually heavy but it rains almost every day, mainly in the summer season, as mentioned. It usually comes along with strong winds so an umbrella won’t be the best option. Therefor we recommend to wear a waterproof jacket and some leather or waterproof shoes.
In case you are planning to do some trekking or outdoor activity we should add to the ‘musts’ list a fast drying or waterproof pant and high-top waterproof trekking shoes. This is not optional, is mandatory that every outdoor tour operator to ask visitors to wear the right clothing. And is for your own seafty!
In case you visit us in winter time, and you want to enjoy some snow activities, is very important to wear snow pants and apres ski boots. And don’t forget an snow jacket! Is also recommend it to wear a thermal t-shirt not to be cold and to enjoy the experience.
You have not the technical outerwear? No worries! In the city you have many rental, that are open all year around, where to rent clothes and shoes for snow, trekking and other outdoors activities.
Last but not least, allways at any season… Do not forget to bring wool cap, gloves, scarf, sunglasses and sunscreen!
